The research location in Wilhelmshaven was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Rudolf Richter in 1928 (History). The northernmost institute of the Senckenberg network is closely interconnected with important marine research associations and universities in Germany, as well as other associations. Currently, the Marine Research Division consists of four sections: Actuopalaeontology, Marine Biology, Marine Sedimentology, and Marine Geology.
